Education - a lifelong passion
An early fascination with the way learning opens doors to possibility and self-discovery has shaped Elizabeth’s distinguished career as a teacher over more than thirty years. She served as Lecturer in Violin and Co-ordinator of Strings at Monash University for sixteen years and has taught at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, and the Australian National Academy of Music. Elizabeth currently teaches a select number of students in her private studio, working with students of all ages, from early stages to post-tertiary level. Her experience encompasses one to one tuition, audition preparation, chamber music coaching and directorship of chamber orchestras.
Elizabeth’s students have won eisteddfods, achieved perfect VCE scores, and completed AMUSA and Licentiate examinations with distinction. They have also gained entry to prestigious institutions including the Australian National Academy of Music and Australian, European, UK and American Universities including Juilliard and Manhattan Schools of Music.
Former students perform in orchestras worldwide, including the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonic, and the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln, while many others have gone on to teach in schools throughout Australia. Most recently, two students have been appointed as mentees in a new assistant quartet to the Flinders Quartet.

Teaching Philosophy

Elizabeth’s teaching is grounded in the belief that technical security, physical ease, and intellectual curiosity are essential to a sustainable and expressive musical life. She works closely with each student’s individual personality, learning style, and aspirations, guiding them to develop both artistic independence and a strong sense of personal responsibility in their practice and performance.
Central to her approach is the cultivation of efficient posture and freedom of movement, enabling ease, flexibility, and longevity at the instrument. Students are taught a wide-ranging and adaptable set of practice strategies, encouraging them to think analytically, ask questions, and engage actively with the learning process rather than relying on imitation alone.
Elizabeth aims to foster not only high-level technical and musical achievement, but also a lifelong love of music. Her teaching supports students at every stage—from foundational learning through to advanced professional preparation—helping them build resilience, confidence, and the capacity to continue developing independently long after formal study has concluded.
